Multicultural Alphabet Books
A more diverse alphabet book for the next generation, celebrating Asian themes and heritage from A to Z.
Jessica Lam is a first-generation Chinese American, born and raised in North Carolina.
Growing up, she loved egg tarts, but they were a rare treat. Actually, she noticed that many of her friends did not recognize many of the foods her family ate or the holidays they celebrated. When her niece and nephew were born, she hoped they would grow up with a different experience. She looked long and hard for culturally relevant books for them. When the options were disappointingly limited, she decided to team up with her cousin Nevy, an artist in the Bay Area, to create E is for Egg Tart.
Her initial idea of one book for two readers has inspired a Multicultural Alphabet Book series. The goal of these simple yet beautifully illustrated English alphabet books is to encourage a broad, inclusive vocabulary for children at an early age. “C” can be for chopsticks instead of forks and “N” can be for noodles of all types, not just macaroni and spaghetti.
These books show children from an Asian background that their culture is relevant and important, and should be celebrated from A to Z. For children of all backgrounds, these books will describe many familiar words but hopefully will also evoke curiosity — and maybe a few readers will even venture to try an egg tart or kulfi for the very first time!
